Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) is a solution used in modern diesel engines to reduce harmful emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) from the exhaust. DEF is a mixture of purified deionised water and a very high purity urea, a chemical compound that is commonly used as a fertilizer.
When diesel fuel is burned in an engine, it produces NOx emissions that can be harmful to both the environment and human health. DEF is injected into the exhaust stream of a diesel engine, where it breaks down into ammonia and reacts with the NOx in the exhaust to form harmless nitrogen and water vapor. This process is known as Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR).
DEF is stored in a separate tank in the vehicle, and it is typically topped off during fuel refilling or maintenance (generally the tank with a blue cap or lid as shown above). The amount of DEF consumed depends on factors such as engine size, load, and operating conditions, but a general rule of thumb is that DEF consumption is roughly between 2 and 4% of diesel fuel consumption.
DEF use is increasing as many on-road and off-road diesel vehicle manufacturers are adopting SCR technology to meet stricter emissions regulations, as well as growing demand for commercial & transport vehicles.
In New Zealand, Diesel Exhaust Fluid is available at some truck stops & petrol stations, auto parts stores, and directly from DEF suppliers. It is important to use only DEF that meets the industry standard known as ISO 22241, as using non-compliant fluids can damage the SCR system and result in costly repairs. Asking your retailer or supplier for a Certificate of Analysis is always recommended.
