What Is Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR)?
SCR is an emission control technology used to reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions in vehicles, machinery and industrial processes. It involves a catalyst and a reducing agent to convert harmful NOx into harmless nitrogen and water. SCR systems, very commonly used in diesel engines, utilize a catalytic converter and inject a reducing agent such as diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) (also known as AdBlue®, AUS32) into the exhaust stream. The catalyst creates a chemical reaction that converts NOx into nitrogen and water. SCR technology is vital for compliance with emissions regulations and achieves over 90% reduction in NOx. Embraced by the diesel engine industry, it is increasingly being employed in applications such as power plants & generators, industrial boilers, and off-road vehicles & machinery.

What are the Benefits of running an SCR-equipped System?
1) Environmental Impact: By converting NOx into harmless nitrogen and water, SCR systems contribute to reducing air pollution and minimizing the formation of smog, acid rain, and particulate matter. This has a large positive impact on both human health and the environment.
2) Fuel Efficiency: SCR systems are designed to work in conjunction with advanced engine technologies, optimizing fuel efficiency. By reducing NOx emissions, the system allows engines to operate more efficiently and economically, leading to potential fuel savings and reduced operating costs.
3) Reliability & Longevity: SCR catalysts used in the systems have proven to be durable and long-lasting. When properly maintained, they can effectively function for extended periods, providing consistent emission reduction benefits.
4) Significant NOx Reduction: SCR technology is highly effective in reducing nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. It can achieve over 90% reduction efficiency, helping vehicles and industrial processes comply with stringent emissions regulations and improving air quality.
5) Compliance with Regulations: SCR technology allows vehicles and industrial operations to meet stringent emissions standards set by regulatory authorities. This ensures compliance with environmental regulations and avoids penalties or restrictions on operations.
How does an SCR system work?
An SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) system works through a series of chemical reactions to reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions into harmless nitrogen (N2) and water (H2O). Here's a general overview of how an SCR system works:
1) Exhaust Gas Flow: The process begins with the flow of exhaust gases generated by an engine or industrial process. These gases contain NOx pollutants, which are a byproduct of the combustion process.
2) Injection of Reducing Agent: A reducing agent, typically a solution called diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) such as EcoPro DEF, is injected into the exhaust stream. DEF is a mixture of high-purity urea and deionised water.
3) Formation of Ammonia: Within the SCR catalyst, the injected DEF undergoes a thermal decomposition process, releasing ammonia (NH3) gas. The temperature of the exhaust gas and the catalyst's proximity ensure the efficient conversion of urea into ammonia.
4) NOx Conversion: As the exhaust gases pass through the SCR catalyst, the ammonia reacts with the NOx molecules in the presence of oxygen. This reaction occurs on the surface of the catalyst, which contains active sites where the chemical reaction can take place.
5) NOx to Nitrogen and Water: The chemical reaction between the ammonia and NOx results in the conversion of NOx into harmless nitrogen (N2) and water (H2O). This process is known as reduction, where the harmful pollutants are transformed into environmentally benign components.
6) Control System Optimization: An SCR system includes a control system that monitors various parameters, such as exhaust gas temperature, NOx concentration, and oxygen levels. This control system ensures the optimal injection of the reducing agent, adjusting the amount of DEF to maintain a precise stoichiometric ratio for efficient NOx conversion.
